Old Style Hopi Carved Supai Singer Traditional Katsina Doll
Description
Old Style Hopi Carved Supai Singer Traditional Katsina Doll by AH
Supai (Konin) Singer Katsina varies from mesa to mesa. When they dance, they represent the Hopi neighbors to the west, the Havasupai Indians. This particular version is the Supai Singer. According to Second Mesa, this Katsina represents a Havasupai Singer who became a traitor and the Hopi were set to kill him. He taught them many songs trying to save his own life. After the Singer was finished teaching the Hopi all the songs he knew, the Hopi still kept their word and executed the singer. This Katsina is a reminder of the songs and of being a person of your word and not betraying your friends. We are not familiar with the carver but have supplied his signature.
