Native American Knives

At Kachina House we carry a vast selection of Native American knives, handmade by artists from various tribes. Crafted and accented with natural materials, we offer unique objects of art and craft.

Knives are personal items for Native Americans and all other indigenous people. Native American knives were employed in close quarters fighting or thrown from horseback. They were also used for scalping enemies, which became a trademark for some of the Native American tribes. A hunter or warrior would carve a blade from the bone of a large game animal. In order to get a handle, one might tie an antler or stick to the base of the blade for a better grip. Many throwing knives were made of one piece which made the balance better and the knife easier to throw more accurately. The blades were made from metal only after the arrival of and interaction with the Spanish. Until that time, the Native Americans did not forge metal.
