Old Style Hopi Carved Laguna Gambler Traditional Katsina Doll
Description
Old Style Hopi Carved Laguna Gambler Traditional Katsina Doll by Markus Barton
This Katsina originates from either Laguna or Santo Domingo Pueblo. He appears in summer and night dances. He carries rings in one hand and a stick in the other. He throws the rings in the air one at a time and tries to catch them on his stick. If/when he gets all his rings on the stick he can go home. This is the gamble. His mask can appear with stripes, much like the Tobacco Flower or, like this beautiful piece, with a butterfly. Markus honors his clan by including a Mudhead on the kilt in the front and back. A really wonderful carving.
