Old Style Hopi Carved Hoho Mana and Grandmother Traditional Katsina Dolls

Description

Old Style Hopi Carved Hoho Mana and Grandmother Traditional Katsina Dolls by Joe Gash

Hoho Mana is an "import" from Zuni Pueblo and this maiden accompanies the Hemis Katsina at the Home Dance (Niman). This Katsina was introduced to the Hopi sometime just before the turn of the century. The lines on her face represent the Milky Way. The Grandmother Katsina (Hahai-i wu-uti) or Happy Mother shares with Crow Mother the title of Mother of all the Katsinam. Her husband is said to be Eototo and her children are the monsters, the Nataskas. She appears during the Bean Dance (Powamuya), the Serpent Ceremony and at Home Going (Niman). She speaks in a high voice and is very talkative. This is a wonderful "back-to-back" carving by Joe.
