Old Style Hopi Carved Hair Hungry Traditional Racer Katsina Doll
Description
Old Style Hopi Carved Hair Hungry Traditional Racer Katsina Doll by Leander Tenakhongva
Hair Hungry. The name of this Katsina comes from the Hopi words for a man's hair knot or queue (Nasompi) and hungry; he is the "hair hungry" Katsina. He races with a pair of sheep shears, scissors, or a knife in one hand. Upon overtaking the challenger, he will fling him to the ground and cut off his hair knot or snip off only a token lock, as he sees fit. This Katsina is one of the few runners who appears consistently in elaborate clothing on all three mesas.
