Native American Santo Domingo Handbuilt Polychrome Vase with Corn and Migration

Description

Native American Santo Domingo Handbuilt Polychrome Vase with Corn and Migration by Thomas Tenorio

In the late 19th century, Santo Domingo Pueblo developed a style of decoration that was unlike that of any of the other pueblos. Santo Domingo potters developed a strong bold form of ornamentation in black and red. The Santo Domingo religious beliefs prevent the potters from including human figures on their pottery, for "only Creator makes figures." Thomas Tenorio did a beautiful job not only building this pot, but the painting is perfect. This pot was handbuilt, then fired outside in an open pit. Thomas paintsĀ these traditional pots with pigments thatĀ he makes. This is a spectacular piece by a wonderful craftsman. This beautiful piece is 12" tall and 11" diameter at the shoulder. The opening is 6" in diameter.
