Native American Santo Domingo Handbuilt Polychrome Vase
Description
Native American Santo Domingo Handbuilt Polychrome Vase by Rose Pacheco
In late 19th century, Santo Domingo Pueblo developed a style of decoration that was unlike that of any of the other pueblos. Santo Domingo potters developed a strong bold form of ornamentation in black and red. The Santo Domingo religious beliefs prevents the potters from including human figures on their pottery for "only Creator makes figures." This pot was handbuilt, then fired outside in an open pit. This is a beautiful piece with two birds eating the berries from a plant. The petal top of the vase is quite unusual and beautiful.
