In late 19th century, Santo Domingo Pueblo developed a style of decoration that was unlike that of any of the other pueblos. Santo Domingo potters developed a strong bold form of ornamentation in black and red. The Santo Domingo religious beliefs prevent the potters from including human figures on their pottery for "only Creator makes figures." This pot was handbuilt, then fired outside in an open pit. This is a beautiful piece with deer encircling the piece and separated by blooming yucca plants. The inside of the pot has the sign for water painted around the rim.
