Native American Santo Domingo Handbuilt Polychrome Bowl
Description
Native American Santo Domingo Handbuilt Polychrome Bowl by Rose and Billy Pacheco
In late 19th century, Santo Domingo Pueblo developed a style of decoration that was unlike that of any of the other pueblos. Santo Domingo potters developed a strong bold form of ornamentation in black and red. The Santo Domingo religious beliefs prevent the potters from including human figures on their pottery for "only Creator makes figures." This pot was handbuilt, then fired outside in an open pit. This is a beautiful piece has a butterfly with flower and a hummingbird with flower on two sides of the pot separated by classic, bold, geometric shapes. The inside of the pot also shows a hummingbird with a flower.
