This Navajo red clay pot is etched with traditional symbols and has a lizard as the focal point on the shoulder. The lizard symbolizes patience and wisdom for this reptile lives in a very harsh environment and knows where to find water and when to seek shade from the glaring desert sun. The shape of this pot indicates that it would have been used as a "smoke pot" or one in which the individual would place dried herbs and light the herbs in order to have them smolder and "smoke" or smudge to cleanse the area and the people of evil spirits. Velcita added etching inside the rim of this beautiful piece.
