Native American Papago Made Plate Basket with Eagle

This beautiful basket is from a private collection. This beautiful plate was created using the open coil method where coils of grasses are bundled and then the coils are stacked and woven together It is a classic for the Tohono O'odham or Desert People who live in the Sonoran Desert of Arizona and Mexico. The materials are still gathered by hand and consist of beargrass and soaptree yucca and devils claw. This plate has the eagle on both sides which is quite unusual. Native cultures it is believed that Eagle is the messenger between the People and the Great Spirit.
