Native American Painted Hides and Paintings

At Kachina House we carry a vast selection of Native American Hopi and Zuni Katsinam and Navajo Kachinas, handmade by artists from various tribes. Crafted and accented with natural materials we offer unique objects of art and craft.

Artwork represented here includes but is not limited to a painted deer hide with hair off, and a painting incorporating a buffalo hide. Native Americans painted on hides and would use these painted hides as personal garments, or as covering on their teepees or adornment for their horses. Due to the decimation of the buffalo herds and other game animals of the Great Plains during and after the Civil War, painting on buffalo hide gave way to works on paper, muslin, and canvas.

We carry a large selection of painting in acrylic by Richard Gorman, (Navajo/Hopi) known for both his paintings and his Katsina carvings. Richard's work illustrates the beauty and charm of Navajo maidens, Hopi maidens, and Yei dancers. No two are alike and each has unique appeal.

Each of the contemporary hides at Kachina House is an original work of art painted on deer hide
