Antique Native American Hopi Carved Peeping Out Man Harvester Katsina Doll
Description
Antique Native American Hopi Carved Peeping Out Man Harvester Katsina Doll by Henry Shelton
This Katsina is called Peeping Out Man (Na-uikuitaka) he is a Rugan or Rasper Corn Dancer. He gets his name because it looks like he is "peeping" over the thick pine ruff that surrounds his mask. He is fairly common dancer and appears in the Mixed Dances, Plaza Dances and in the Night Dances in March. As a harvester Katsina he carries gifts for the children when he arrives in the plaza. This particular Katsina is a beautiful older piece by Henry Shelton which was acquired from a private collection.
