The Chowilawu is a Katsina that very few Hopi will carve. He appears during the initiation ceremony into the Powamu fraternity and is never seen in public, although he appears on all three Mesas. He sometimes seems to be equated with violent weather, a whirlwind, lightning or thunder. This is a very unusual piece and we are happy to have it in the shop.
