Native American Hopi Carved Planting Katsina Sculpture
Description
Native American Hopi Carved Planting Katsina Sculpture by Harold Nevayaktewa
The Planting Katsina (Paski) carries his planting stick and is ready to plant his fields. This is a wonderful piece by Harold. The planter carries his stick and is bundled in his blanket in the early morning as he begins his planting. He sings as he digs in the ground to plant the seedds. The sweat that comes off his face (the red marks) act like rain to the seeds. The corn stalks are reaching up to the sky. Multiple symbols on this piece include his wife (Tobacco Clan--a pipe), Harold (Snake Clan), his sons (Deer Clan), and other Hopi symbols. The dots on the piece represent all of our prayers rising into the sky. The surface is pecked, much like the petroglyphs that are so prevalent and important to the Native Americans.
