Native American Hopi Carved Yellow Sand Snake Guard Katsina Doll
Description
Native American Hopi Carved Yellow Sand Snake Guard Katsina Doll by Thomas Fredericks
The Yellow Sand Snake Situlili is a Guard and a disciplinary god. He appears at the Bean (Powamuya) and the Day Dances. His duty is to patrol the dances and guard the dancers. He watches over the ceremonies. He is also known as the Rattlesnake Katsina. This wonderful piece by Thomas shows the Katsina climbing out of the kiva. Just below him is the Sun Katsina just peeking over the horizon. Behind him is an Ahola or Chief Katsina in a flat or traditional form. This is a really nice piece by Thomas and he has combined the contemporary figures with traditional style feathers in an active scene.
