Native American Hopi Carved Parrot Katsina Sculpture
Description
Native American Hopi Carved Parrot Katsina Sculpture by Alton Pashano (dec.)
The Parrot Katsina (Kyash or Kyaro), is one of several Katsinam credited with bringing abundant summer growth to the corn crops on the Mesas. The feathers of the parrot were prized by prehistoric Indian groups. Feathers and even live parrots were traded from Central America as far north as the Four Corners area. This beautiful sculpture shows the Parrot Katsina holding a red parrot with very long tail feathers. The body of this sculpture is painted like a Hopi sash. This is a classic piece by a man gone too soon.
