Native American Hopi Carved Morning Singer Katsina Doll
Description
Native American Hopi Carved Morning Singer Katsina Doll by Lean Monongye
Early Morning Singer Katsina (Talavai) represents early morning or dawn because he appears at dawn during the Bean Dance (Powamuya) and announces news. He sings songs and rings his bell to wake the village while passing out bean sprouts for the people to eat. This substantial carving is wonderfully detailed. Lean did a fabulous job on the folds of the manta, the weight of the dancer in the sand, and even the pot and the lizard that accent the base. Nothing was left undone by this skilled carver. This piece is from a private collection.
