Native American Hopi Carved Eagle Dancer Katsina Sculpture

Description

Native American Hopi Carved Eagle Dancer Katsina Sculpture by Troy Quimayousie

Eagle (Kwahu) appears most often with the Mudheads in the Kiva or Repeat Dances of early March. His dance duplicates the actions and motions of eagles and is a prayer for an increase of eagles. Eagles occupy a rather unique position among the Hopi, for they are treated as honored guests and are given presents just as Hopi children are. Eagle is believed to be the messenger between the people and their spirit guides. This sculpture has the pueblo in the front with the tops of the kiva ladder. In the back of the piece shines a Sunface above the Sun clan house which sits at the base.
