Native American Hopi Carved Corn Maiden Katsina Sculpture
Description
Native American Hopi Carved Blue Corn Maiden Katsina Sculpture by Johnny Wester III
The Katsin Mana, or Katsina Maiden, is the most ubiquitous of all the women who appear with other Katsinam. If she is carrying yellow corn, she is known as the Yellow Corn Maiden, similarly blue corn, etc. She also changes her name to that of the Katsina with whom she is dancing, although her appearance does not change. Her presence is a prayer for a bountiful corn harvest. This sweet corn maiden is wrapped up in her manta to ward off the chilly morning. You can see where the manta comes apart her blue corn fruit. This showing of a woman in full fruit indicates that she is ready to bear children.
