Description

Native American Hopi Carved Comanche Katsina Doll by Alexander Youvella Sr.

Comanche (Komantsi or Tutumsi) pays tribute to the Comanche warrior and his powerful presence. The Comanche were taught by the Hopi how to dry farm. In exchange, the Comanche gave the Hopi their dances and songs in order to call for the rain to come and nourish the earth. In honor of these warriors the Hopi created this Katsina. He appears at the Mixed Dances. The Comanche is a powerful and feared warrior. This version shows the dancer in full feathered bonnet. Each feather represents an act of bravery.
