Native Chilean Made Rainsticks

These wonderful rainsticks are made in Chile from cactus. The cacti, which are hollow, are dried in the sun. The spines are pounded into the hollow cactus like nails. The spines are then gathered and driven back into the holes in the exterior, spine point first. Pebbles or other tiny objects are placed inside the rainstick and the ends are sealed. A sound like falling rain is made when the rainstick is turned end to end as the tiny objects drop against the spines. The slower the turn, the more quiet the rainfall. These rainsticks are used to bring rain, a much needed commodity in the southwestern desert of the United States. Yarn trim will vary. The second photo shows the inside of a rainstick with little rocks and cactus spines that together make the sound of rain.
