Mata Ortiz Handbuilt and Handpainted Smoke Pot by Lucio Soto

This wonderful smoke pot was handbuilt and handpainted by Mata Ortiz resident Lucio Soto. This piece has wonderful tool markings as well as mirror-black and flat black geometric patterns painted on the shoulder of the pot. The shape of this pot indicates that it would have been used as a "smoke pot" or one in which the individual would place dried herbs and light the herbs in order to have them smolder and "smoke" or smudge to cleanse the area and the people of evil spirits. A classic piece of Mata Ortiz pottery.
