Gourd Art by Robert Rivera

At Kachina House we carry a selection of gourd art and seed pot art handmade by Robert Rivera. Crafted and accented with natural materials, we offer unique objects of art and craft.

Gourd artist Robert Rivera has a talent for taking an object that is ordinary and plain, such as a gourd or a seed pod, and transforming it into a work of art. His heritage includes Apache, Spanish and French, and Robert is known around the world for his gourd work. He was inspired by the arts of the Puebloans to create his own unique pieces.

Rivera’s journey as an artist began in the late 1970s when he saw a mound of gourds on the side of the road while on a driving trip from New Mexico to California. The shapes and textures intrigued him and he began transforming them, creating whatever came to mind, channeling the ideas and designs of the Native American people.

His work has evolved over the years as he is consistently finding new artistic purpose for his gourds. Rivera was successful in offering his Pueblo gourd art to the world and earned an immediate following. Between etching, dying, stitching, and more, Rivera’s gourds are always one-of-a-kind. Somewhat later he discovered the seed pods from the Florida mahogany tree and began a new form of art.
