Mata Ortiz Handbuilt Turtle Pot
Description
Native Puebloan Handbuilt Turtle Pot by Dora Quezada
This turtle pot is a recreation of ancient vessels that were found in and around the Paquime/Casas Grandes region of Chihuahua, Mexico. It is believed that these pieces were created to depict the birds and animal life that were so important to the people. Dora Quezada handbuilt and handetched this beautiful turtle. The Quezada family is renowned for this 'tejido' (textured) or braided style. The shiny black is achieved by using a mixture of kerosene and graphite and rubbing it into the pot then polishing it with a stone until it glows. Pottery ring included.
