1920-30s Native American Santo Domingo Made Depression Necklace
Description
1920-30s Native American Santo Domingo Made Depression Necklace
This very unique Depression era necklace was created in Santo Domingo. During the Depression materials were scarce and the artists had to use whatever they could find to make necklaces. These materials included bakelite shards, gypsum, plastic from combs, pails or restaurant utensils, and crushed turquoise. Old phonograph records or car battery casings were used as the backing material. These necklaces were sold along the highway or at the railroad stops for as little as $1.00. This particular necklace has handcut stone beads strung on cotton cording with 8 triangular pieces made from battery casings with turquoise chips, red and white plastic. The earrings dangle 2.25 inches on (new) French wires.
23 in. long + thunderbird at 1.75 in. tall x 1.375 in. wide; earrings 2.25 in. long x 1 in. wide
